Last Friday was a wonderful day here is southeaster PA. So I went to the Harmony Hill Nature Area on the other side of West Chester and went for a bike ride on the trail. I was amazed to find several more species in bloom. I found a bunch of marsh marigold and a little phlox. I also found a large patch of a small flower that I haven’t identified yet.

Here is the marsh marigold. These guys are very reflective. I used a diffuser and a polarizing filter cut the glare down.

Here is the phlox:

And here is the small flower that I don’t know what it is. It is smaller than the tip of my little finger. I put an extension tube on my macro lens so this is greater than 1:1.

Winter Aconite is a woodland flower that blooms early in the season—early to late February. It it a relative of the buttercup.
These pix are from some I transplanted last year. They seem to be doing just fine.

In fact this is the first post I’ve made with the new template. Here are a couple of images from down in DC.

This first one I converted to black and white. The large area of dark negative space stands up better than it does in color. And I do like high contrast B&W.

I exposed and developed this so that the columns would make a dark frame for a really bright Abe Lincoln to ensure the viewer’s eye went directly to him. And toned the text so that it was an noticeable as an accent.

In this image the Vietnam War Memorial takes up most of the frame. But compositionally it creates a set of converging lines who’s vanishing point is at the Washington Monument. Even though the Washington Monument is small in the frame and is partially hidden in the fog its brightest draws the view’s eye.

As a side note this is the original color file (note the red light on top of the WM) and is not a B&W conversion.

Today Adobe has made Lightroom 4 Beta available for free, until it is officially released March 31, to anyone who wants to try it out. Two of the many new features look very promising.

New slides in the Basic Panel for better highlight and shadow recovery

Being able to paint White Balance with local adjustment brush

And remember, even if you don’t use Lightroom, these new features will, at some time in the future, be a part of Camera Raw. So Camera Raw uses my want to take a look at all the new features. Very exciting stuff—local noise reduction, better Clarity, soft proofing, adjust the individual R, G and B channels with curves (just like in Photoshop) and more! Check them out.

This all means that even fewer on my images will ever see Photoshop and that means less time spent at the computer working images. And hopefully that means more time of other stuff like shooting more images.

Just Google Lightroom 4 or go the the Adobe Labs Lightroom 4 Beta site to learn more and download the ap.

As with all Beta software you should not use it for production work. In the case of this beta you should not use LR4 to manage your image files. Continue to use LR3 for that. Use and play with LR4 on a “dummy” catalog.
